BOOK REVIEW - ARSH VERMA's The Velvet Hotline

Image
The Book The book tells a story of a well- meaning protagonist, Ayingbi who an empath by nature, starts finding herself in trouble the more she wants to help other people in need.  PC:  fizdi.com The story delves in the matter of supernatural. A fictional omious entity trying to weaponize the despair of people living on the edge of committing suicide and harvesting their pain to create agony in the world and propagate  circumstances for them to commit suicide. You will read on to find how the ominous agenda is curtailed because of a very simple fact aided by our protagonist who is ready to sacrifice herself to save the world from being devoured by the supernatural power.  PC:  creativefabrica.com The author moves effortlessly from comedy to thriller and paranormal activity without the readers noticing until the very last page.  I enjoyed the natural style of writing and truly appreciate the author's  keen view on the minutest of details and chain of ev...

BOOK REVIEW - CARLO M. CIPOLLA's The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity

Image
PC: Book Cover I didn't have the slightest of inkling that Economics and satire could co-exist.  PC: Canva Until I understood the graphs (yes, there are graphs), I was engulfed by the ominous existential crisis. And to couple that, there are laws which are called basic.  PC:  juliastamman.com Somebody must be pranking me because it says, it does not matter who you are.  To top this all, this book was suggested to me by my sister.  Hello! What is happening?  PC: Canva The author begins by saying that the root cause of all miseries the world has, even at individual level, is stupidity.  What drives the concept of this fact, lies in the form of some basic laws as pointed out in the book in the simplest of forms.  PC:  Etsy.com It does not matter how intelligent and intellectual one is. Stupidity is the hallmark.  It is also very unexpected.  Author daringly opines that everyone is not equal and that difference of who is stupid and who ...

SAVE THOSE LOCKS...

Image
PC:   Image by Gabriela Kania from Pixabay  What is more worrisome to you, those mistakenly dropped strands in your food or those tangled in your comb? Well, both are equally frightening, including those which you see going down the drain in front of your eyes as you watch helplessly like a mute spectator. Each one of us is fully aware of the horror of hair loss. The affect such a loss has on our psyche to that terror we feel at the dead of night thinking of solutions to stop the recession, err...the hair loss, has an immense impact on us. And, we got nothing but to pat our 'light-head' to sleep. Gruesome sketch, right? But it is what it is! When we start losing hair and we no longer wake up to dreams of face and hands full of extra voluminous hair out of nowhere as we once used to, the terror depicted above stands valid.  What A Malady:  Hair is a natural resource. We are born with it. Those sitting on scalp are believed to be the most sought after and...

MEMORIZATION - A SKILL TO HOLD ON TO...

Image
PC: Stock Images This one is a question and an introspection.  Ever since the rise in availability of easily accessible information over the Internet, have we developed a hidden reluctance to explore the power of memorization?  Is it true that we see availability of information just a click away and take it for granted?  Have we forgotten the idea of  'learning by heart'?  PC: Stock Images These are some questions skimming through my head when I regularly dive in a flurry of several open tabs and enormous browsing history every single day. I am sure this is not an unusual scene for you either. In a world of  Big Data , for sure we do not need enormous manuscript for people to refer to and heavy course books for school kids to carry on their shoulders.  Yet, as humans our brain is going to be ever green, ever smarter and analytical. This is fool proof until we ignore the power of memorization. Is Memorizing Equal To Rote-Learning?: Pushing your brain to...

INSOMNIA - A DEBILITATING BATTLE...

Image
PC: Stock Images The battle is intense and there is a massive clash of sheer decision-making. Do not be mistaken, this is a serious kind of clash between sense and sensibility. This is an ongoing daily war between your eyes and brain activity. To sleep or to not let sleep, insomnia in medical terms and sleep deprivation in common language. What is Insomnia: An everyday battle with falling asleep is insomnia. The ability to enjoy a sound sleep is hampered, affecting productivity and health. Major factors affecting sleep are spending time over screen and stress. A little local survey revealed that even though people experience stress on and off, it still affects them a lot. Screen time, especially browsing aimlessly on smart phones is a factor people do out of habit.  Why is Insomnia Debilitating: What makes lack of sleep harmful is that it makes us cranky and sluggish. It also makes us less attentive at work. This calls for caffeine intake more than it is required. Sleep-deprived bo...
