BOOK REVIEW - VENKI RAMAKRISHNAN's Gene Machine
The esteemed Nobel Laureate, Venki Ramakrishnan has a had an interesting start to his career.
But, much more than just interesting, I find him a master of all trades and he is quite an inspiration to students and also to anyone who has hard time figuring out what they want to do in life.
He is a witty biologist with a background in Physics and goes on to win a Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Just WOW!
For the author, solving the enigmatic Ribosome proved to be a life-long adventure involving bumpy roads, some hard to swallow hiccups and interesting journey with friends and family.
His story, apart from being all scientific and intellectual, also clearly depicts the importance of family and support friends offer.
Without a family to fall back on and supportive friends, one cannot expect to tackle great battles in life.
This book is an enchanting memoir of hilarious moments, sometimes mundane yet mostly exciting scientific escapades, unexpected failures and also of success chugging along with silly and prudent memorable events of life.
Author is very mindful. He has made sure to name everybody he has worked with or people of aquaintance for the work they have done.
Enigmatic Ribosome is the hero of the story. It is not only some mysterious molecular structure but also holds monumental part in the history of mankind.
All of us seem too informed about DNA that we tend to ignore the imprtance of RNA all in all.
This book is a window to that enigma, brilliantly uncovering its importance.

The book is actually multi-faceted.
It tells you about Science, human frailities, work related competition and also highlights how too much work is not only bad but can eventually pull you down.
Afterall, all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy!
Never forget that.

The book is filled with witty moments for readers to enjoy while also taking in a lot of scientific information.
There is a lot of Science going on in the book. Nevertheless, it is interesting to read as it will take you through the journey of author's life as well as how Science is done.
It is enlightening to anyone interested in understanding research work.
Life is all about uncertainties replete with losses and yet it is forgiving and rewarding that we want to live it and explore the unseen to discover the unknown!
Fate, being the foundational stone as the author highlights, "But it also made me realise, yet again, how science depends on weird quirks of fate."
And indeed, a lot of many things in life.
