SUSTAINING LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA...
I have not ventured far and beyond to observe birds, flourishing vegetation or made a tour to many national parks so far. Nevertheless, I have had a few interactions with local flora and fauna community once or twice and that is when I got an opportunity to offer little help to make them thrive and sustain.
It turns out, even if you have not had an opportunity to venture in the Jungles and Prairies like those who make a difference in community by providing their efforts in the restoration of life and vegetation, you can still come across few to several occasions when you can pat yourself on the back.
Some years ago during the season of heavy snowfall, an eagle fell with a thud on the icy snow after having flown right across a glass window. It hurt its wings so bad that the blood started oozing out. I happened to witness her predicament right from her hapless flight to the fall. The only help I could think of to offer was a bowl of water and a cloth to wrap around her injured wings. In the meantime, I made a call to the local Bird Rescue organization.
This is the closest shot I could get.
On another occasion, a little turtle came ambling around my residence, probably lost. I believe it had lost its way even though a pond sits just across the street. It was not injured and I thought it might just find its way back, later realizing probably, I could have offered a help to make sure it did not go lost or hurt. Looks like I missed an opportunity there to sustain the community's fauna.
What To Do:
No brainer, anytime you come across a hurt plant or a lost animal, try to find a way to sustain it or call your local wildlife center if it is a bird or an animal.
If you have a good open space outside your residence, it is worth every shot to sow native plants as these plants do not require much of an effort and need less care. In case, you enjoy plantation, go ahead and create a local mix of flora and fauna just at your doorstep.
Other great options are creating or keeping a bird-house around that area, near a window or in your balcony.
It is no wonder what a great adventure it is to wake up to the twitter and chirping of birds.
As a kid, I competed with sparrows in cooing and whistling by my window almost every morning.
They always won!
Bird-house with food and water is a great attraction to birds. You would notice different kinds of birds come to flock, nimble on food and fly away again.
Encourage:
Encourage yourself and your kids to indulge in planting seeds, experimenting with easily available seeds at home in a pot/jar or getting already seeded plant that you can grow inside or outside your home.
Planting basil, mint, cilantro or parsley is a great way to get started.
You can read at length the importance of sustaining native plants and vegetation around your community at The Ecological Landscape Alliance.
What A Lot Of People Do Already:
I reached out to some of my friends to know what they do to thrive local flora and fauna.
Following is the response I received, indeed soul-soothing.
Share your ideas about what you do or what you would like to do to thrive your local flora and fauna.
Human beings have full ability and potential to be kind. We all should come together to help any species. Great article Mahvash. Thanks for sharing your personal experiences related to this. I love how herd of deers visit my backyard, it’s an amazing view and we love it, planning to put water for them out there today so they can quench their thirst. :)
