She Sells Sea Shells on the Sea Shore…

Tongue twisters are not only enjoyable, they also enhance eloquence and help with clarity of speech. It is a heartfelt activity that makes us roll on the floor laughing.

Historically speaking, the first known tongue twister came along as a song sung by Billy Murray in 1908. You can enjoy the song, link included below.

As children, most of us must have even made our own twisters and challenged our friends. It is interesting to note that these exist in every culture and every language.

What Makes Tongue Twisters Fun:

The idea that you have to produce the perfect speech with funny sentence formation without derailing the correct pronunciation is in itself a tough task.

Like SHE SELLS SEA SHELLS, it gets tricky to maintain the correct placement of words in the sentence. We instead trip and it becomes SEA SHELLS SHE SELLS and there you go hurtling down with laughter.

Why You Should Have Fun With Twisters:

Well, it is no brainer! You enjoy it and you will enjoy it whenever you try it.

Besides, it is a great way to bring clarity to speech upon continuous usage. At times, most of us do tend to mix up the correct sound of a word. Some of us have trouble keeping the correct sound when we are speaking faster than usual. Tongue Twisters come along as a play thing to improve the eloquence.

Secondly, it is a brain activity where we are required to finish a tricky sentence in the least amount of time, on repeat.

This reminds me of the sport called 'Kabaddi'' where a player is supposed to keep uttering 'Kabaddi', probably a hundred times until tagging the opponent. Even though it includes only a single word with three syllables (Ka' ba' Ddi'), the utterance has to be maintained to be recognizable, KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI KABADDI.

Isn't it fun as well as tough?

Play It With Kids:

Again, playing with tongue twisters at an early age will help them with speech and learning correct phonetics and diction. Moreover, this is a fun, playful activity parents can engage in with their little blabbers.
